A1 expansion northern Zurich bypass

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, more than 20,000 visitors took the opportunity to participate in the «tunnel festival» and inspected the new third tube of the Gubrist motorway tunnel  Bicycles were available for transiting the whole length of the tunnel and were in constant use from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in both directions. Many guests also enjoyed the tunnel atmosphere by taking a ride on the rubber-wheeled sightseeing train. In addition, the program included a show presented by the emergency services, tours of the huge control centers and a wide range of catering options.

Early on Thursday morning, April 20, 2023, the third tube of the Gubrist tunnel was commissioned. Westbound traffic has been flowing through the new tunnel tube since shortly before 4 a.m. As part of the drainage, surfacing and foundation work has not yet been completed, some construction space is still required in Weiningen. Therefore, for the time being, only two lanes are available for traffic in the new tube. The official opening with the release of the third lane will take place on July 3, 2023 in the presence of Federal Councillor A. Rösti.

The formal opening event with Federal Councillor A. Rösti is envisaged for July 4, 2023, when all three westbound lanes will be available to road users.

The commissioning of the third tube of the Gubrist tunnel has been postponed until spring 2023 due to the current global economic situation (Covid).

During the night of April 22/23, 2023, there will be a "silent opening" of the third tube to regular traffic. A public festival and the authorities’ event are expected to take place in mid-April 2023.

In early May 2023, the renovation work of the existing second Gubrist tube will start. Westbound traffic (direction Bern) will be accomodated on two lanes in the new third tube, while eastbound traffic (direction St. Gallen) will occupy two lanes in the first tube.

Maintenance project Hagnau – Augst

The GS-DETEC (General secretary of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication) has approved the "Operations Center South East" project. No complaints were received against this decision. Thus, details concerning the construction process of the new operations center next to the east portal of the Schweizerhalle tunnel are now being planned. Procurement of services is expected to take place in 2023.

We tie economics and engineering together

Transport facilities should enable safe, reliable and cost-efficient transport, protect people and the environment, achieve great effectiveness and be beneficial and lucrative.

The more the demands of operators and users, the concerns of environmental protection, and the interests of investors as well as taxpayers are in balance, the easier it is to realise and run transport facilities efficiently.

R+R combines competencies in technical and civil engineering, infrastructure management, transport economics, environmental and spatial analysis, as well as project management.

We ensure a balance between financial expenditure and sustainable benefit from infrastructure and transport operations.

Our principles
Our professional approach is based on the principles of systems engineering. This requires consistent definition and structuring of projects, making the diverse network of complex tasks more manageable. A time-efficient project flow is ensured and allows parallel processing of part assignments.

R+R constantly monitors the entire process and guides it with foresight and appropriate to the respective project stage.

  • systematic, holistic thinking
  • well-defined boundaries
  • well-defined objectives
  • well-defined procedures and processes
  • coherent and firm decisions
  • broad and balanced information for all parties involved

Competencies in the entire life cycle of facilities
R+R assesses and evaluates facilities in their natural, technical, economical and social environment. This includes the entire life cycle of facilities: planning, construction, operation, utilisation, maintenance and renewal. Far-reaching standards are set for the sustainability of the transport system - for its effectiveness, economy, ecology.

Identifying and solving conflicts
One of our special strengths is the ability to recognise conflicts of interest, and to find mutually satisfying solutions. Open-mindedness, flexibility, and autonomy in judgment represent the most important company principles.

International Open-Mindedness
Our national and international connections allow us to apprehend and incorporate new, relevant developments in a constructive and critical manner, and to establish important partnerships.

Quality management
Our management system has been certified in accordance with the SN EN ISO 9001 standards since 1998.

Our multidisciplinary team suits to our assignments

Civil engineers, economists, spatial planners and environmental engineers form unbiased and powerful teams of experts. This enables us to meet the many different requirements in complex and interdisciplinary projects.

Company history

R+R has operated successfully for more than 25 years.

The R+R team was formed at the end of the 1980s around Dr. Rudolf Burger, then as part of the Motor Columbus Group. In 1994 we ventured into entrepreneurship by founding R+R in Baden. From the very beginning, the employees have played a key role as shareholders of the new company. In 2000 we opened our branch office in Bern.

Today the company is entirely owned by its employees and is completely independent of other companies and interests.
