A1 expansion northern Zurich bypass

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, more than 20,000 visitors took the opportunity to participate in the «tunnel festival» and inspected the new third tube of the Gubrist motorway tunnel  Bicycles were available for transiting the whole length of the tunnel and were in constant use from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in both directions. Many guests also enjoyed the tunnel atmosphere by taking a ride on the rubber-wheeled sightseeing train. In addition, the program included a show presented by the emergency services, tours of the huge control centers and a wide range of catering options.

Early on Thursday morning, April 20, 2023, the third tube of the Gubrist tunnel was commissioned. Westbound traffic has been flowing through the new tunnel tube since shortly before 4 a.m. As part of the drainage, surfacing and foundation work has not yet been completed, some construction space is still required in Weiningen. Therefore, for the time being, only two lanes are available for traffic in the new tube. The official opening with the release of the third lane will take place on July 3, 2023 in the presence of Federal Councillor A. Rösti.

REBUILDING THE WANKDORF EXIT OF THE N6 MOTORWAY

The rebuilding of the N6 motorway exit at Bern-Wankdorf is intended to improve the traffic situation within the heavily used urban road network around Wankdorfplatz and the motorway access with suitable measures. This includes the secondary nodes and the system of feeder roads. The redesign of the intersection points and the provision of grade-seperated exit ramps ensures that the traffic flows are deconcentrated and stabilized.

The pavement will be provided with a low-noise road surface. In order to cope with the high traffic volume during major events, a third grade-seperated exit ramp is planned over the Schermenweg. This new bridge will lead traffic from Zurich or Lausanne over the Schermenweg and then along the Grosse Allmend directly to the Expo area. In addition, the Bolligenstrasse between the Zentweg and Schermenweg crossings will be operated in a one-way regime.

A new bridge for slow-moving traffic will lead the non-motorized traffic across the motorway exit. There is also a cycle lane for commuters along the Schermenweg. The cycle lanes will be widened and cross the exit on the shortest possible route. Pedestrians will also use the new bridge instead of the Schermenweg. The dangerous pedestrian crossings on the exit ramps will no longer be necessary.

As part of an engineering cooperation, R+R takes on the role of support staff for the FEDRO’s overall project manager. The rebuilding project, situated in a high-density urban environment, requires not only the classic management and controlling tasks, but also a great deal of coordinative and creative skills.
